Families and friends
It's half term this week, so I hope that you are all having a break from Homeschooling. Fortunately the weather is lovely, so I have set an out and about challenge for you all, ....at the end of this blog.
A while ago I asked the other leaders in the District what their girls have been doing during lockdown, and a few of them were kind enough to send photos, so I thought that we should say well done to your Brownie sisters.

First up are HP, ES and MR who all took part in VE Day Celebrations with their families.
Sugar Glider has been very busy recently and persuaded her Mum to send lots of photos. Here you can see her upcycling a stool, sewing and knitting useful items, and cooking wartime scones for VE Day. She has also completed the challenge to cook an ethical meal by cooking an omelette with free range eggs. |
I hope that you will all find the time this half term to make notes of all the things you have done towards these challenges, and any interest badges, before you head back to school in the next few weeks. Red Squirrel is not a telepath, and if you don't tell her, she won't know what you have been achieving!
And so to the challenge:
Find the word that has been hidden somewhere in West Kirby.
How do you know where to look? Read on.
To find a place on the Earth, Geographers divide the surface into sections. Latitude is measured in degrees north (in our case ) from 0 at the equator, with the North Pole at 90.
Longitude is measured in degrees East or West of a line through Greenwich in London.
West Kirby is 53 North and 3 West - but so are Llandudno and Blackpool.
So we need to narrow it down! Degrees are therefore divided into 60 minutes, and each minute into 60 seconds. And then to be precise, the seconds will have a string of decimals.
So you need a device that will tell you where you are exactly. eg Google maps or Apple maps on your phone, a Sat nav, a GPS locator etc.
Sometimes the location is given in deg, min, sec. but sometimes just as a degree and its decimals, eg latitude 53.3719, longitude -3.1885 In this case, the minus sign means West of Greenwich.
The actual location of the word has been sent by email to your parents.
Put the numbers into your device and it will show you on a map where the location is. All you have to do is visit that location and look for the hidden word.
Points will be awarded to those who send in the answer in the next 7 days.
If you aren't currently able to leave the house due to self isolation, contact me and we'll work out a different, fun way for you to learn this skill.
