Our Activities in 2019
January
This month we have finished the Skill Builder 'Communicate' and started to award the badges.
February
This month we celebrated Chinese New Year, with crafts, games and food samples.
Then we had an evening based around understanding the Promise so that we could all renew our Promise on Thinking Day.
We went ice skating in the holiday and 4 girls made their Promise in the middle of the rink.
For Thinking Day we tried the 'International Explorer' UMA and renewed our Promises by candlelight.

March
The patrols invented board games and made up the rules, then played each others games.
We started Live Smart Skillbuilder. First up was a cookery competition to create the topping for a pizza. The following week saw everyone practising their sewing skills. We also made cards for Mother's Day,
April
a few guides planned our Easter Party which was held on 15th April. It included egg and spoon races, making origami rabbits and, of course, food.
A day camp was held, but it rained all day so the tent was pitched inside the hall, and we finished with an indoor campfire of sticks and red fairy lights. Nevertheless the Guides who came completed a number of Camp skillbuilder cards and also enjoyed trying encaustic art, - not something we could have done out of doors.

May
Some more cards from the Live Smart Skillbuilder were completed in the unit, and we also tried a Reflect card which was great fun as everyone tested out recipes for Mocktails, and created a drink for their partner. Cottage Weekend We had a great weekend away at Hadlow Cottage. The weather was kind and we could do lots of the activities out of doors. The theme was STEAM CLEANING, so there were a whole range of Science and Technology activities, with a bit of maths and a lot of performing arts in the mix. Making zip wires for cuddly toys and cooking on the wood fires was very successful; walking on a Non-Newtonian fluid, bubbles and how washing products work were interesting; and the European themed evening, with food, singing and dancing from all around Europe (because the rest of the world was watching Eurovision) was pretty exhausting! Chill out time included puzzles, painting, marbling and being the first unit to try out the newly refurbished agility trail. Many thanks to Julie for the food, Karen for the Science, and Sue, Jessica, Issy and Rachael who came to help at various times. The half term holiday gave us a chance to complete the SB card about fires, (and make s'mores) so that some girls have now completed Camp Level 3. |
June
As the weather improved we were able to do more outdoors. We played Litter Bingo in Newton Park, and created stories around the Camp Fire Circle. we spent an evening trying activities related to disabilities such as Braille, BSL and coordination challenges.
July
Following a request for DIY painting skills, we completed a UMA. The girls took turns to paint some of the outside fence, and also designed a colour scheme for an indoor room.
We went to Ashton Park and tried the tree trail, then went to Sandlea Park to eat chips.
Our final meeting was a picnic and games in Newton Park. We said goodbye and thank you to Cathy who has been a leader here for over 6 years, and awarded end of term prizes and badges.

Camp this year was a Jungle Theme. Lots of activities were planned but unfortunately the weather took a hand. Although we pitched in dry weather, the wide game was run in and out of a shelter between downpours. We retreated into the Orchard shelter to do a craft, and play some indoor games. Saturday evening gave us a dry spell - long enough to do the important tasks of lighting a campfire and toasting marshmallows, but the rain set in again at bedtime and didn't stop. In spite of all this 2 more girls managed to complete their Camp Level 3, and some Nights Away badges were awarded. The biggest gain, however, was seeing how well all of the girls worked as a team, keeping cheerful as we struck the tents and packed away camp in pouring rain.
At the end of the summer we set off for Wellies and wristbands again. This year the weather was glorious and everyone had a great time.

September
Girlguiding first Future Girl Action Week focused on Plastic Pollution. We looked at how much plastic we throw away in a week, then made some sculptures with it. Later these were put on display at the Church Creativity Festival to spread the message. The Guides chose Skill Builders to work on in groups. The choices are First Aid, Feel Good and Innovate. We tried out ways to filter water if we are ever lost and need to drink. We were delighted to award the final Baden-Powell Challenge Badge to Issy. October We planned a party and decided to hold it in the dark. Games included Glowworm, flap the bat and Chinese whispers. We were enjoying the food when a minor disaster occurred. The table collapsed and all the plates slid down on to the floor. This month we finally awarded the first interest badge to Izzy - the Craftivism badge. November We helped out at the Village Hall Auction and the Church Fair, and attended the Remembrance Parade on the top of Grange Hill. Meetings began with Parliament Week Activities where Guides tried out different ways to contact their MP then learned how a new Law is debated and voted on in Parliament. Their letters about Climate Change, stopping noisy fireworks, and more help with mental health issues in schools were sent to the MP after she had been re-elected in December. We had a session from a TaeKwondo instructor called Hannah which was great fun. December This month has been about Christmas, so we've made crafts, and practised our Christmas entertainment. The District Social was fun as usual. Everyone enjoys a chocolate tombola! The girls performed "A Visit from St Nicholas" and then were joined by the Brownies to sing and sign, 'The Christmas Alphabet'. We finished with our traditional visit to sing Carols at the Hospital, and then to dine at MacDonalds. |
