What can you change?
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Welcome to our newest member AG, who now has her welcome pack and is taking a full part in our meetings.
At our Zoom meeting we asked everyone to tell us about a good turn they have done in the last week.
Helping Granny with shopping, walking someone's dog, picking up litter, and sticking to the self-isolation rules were all mentioned.
Do you ever find yourself saying, 'That's not fair!', or 'They shouldn't be doing that,' or, 'If I was in charge I would...'?
Well this week on Zoom we thought about:
what we can change ourselves,
what we can help to change,
what we can ask someone else to change,
and what we don't think we can influence at all.
If you'd like to join in the discussion, then collect some coloured beads, buttons, stickers or a set of coloured pens. Allocate a colour to each of the statements above.
Now ask your friends or family to come up with 10 statements of things that they would like to see changed. Here are some ideas:
there's too much litter on the beach'
'we don't eat healthily',
someone's bedroom needs tidying!
'someone is being bullied at school',
the swing in the park is broken,
'many girls around the world don't have a chance to go to school'
Pollution is causing Climate Change'
For each statement choose the colour to match how much influence you think you have. Do you agree with others about the colours? (there aren't any right answers, just opinions)
Use the beads/ buttons/ stickers etc to make something you can keep to remind you that you can at least influence some changes, if not take the required action yourself.
And finally, now that you have thought about all these ideas, choose something you can do to make a change or start making a change - whether its collecting litter, take responsibility for recycling in your home, or writing to someone like a councillor or MP to express your views.
And TAKE THAT ACTION.
Finally, report back on your ideas and your actions.
