What we did in 2014
January
We've started working towards the Big Brownie Birthday Challenge.
First up was discussing our Unit charter and signing it for the new year.
Then we held an evening looking back in time. We sang the old Six songs and tried on uniforms. Everyone tried some of the early challenges, polishing brass, plaiting hair and Brownie exercises.
Our next meeting was some community action. We pulled out the furniture and everyone helped to clean windows and walls, and brush the floor of our meeting hall. After that we enjoyed hot chocolate with marshmallows.

February
An evening spent thinking about careers the girls would like. We were entertained by a drama group, and a music group.
Celebrating Thinking Day with an evening learning about South America and a game to think about barriers to education for girls around the world.

April Outdoor Adventure
Just before the new term started we held an outdoor activity day in our grounds. Guides (and a couple of Brownie visitors) were able to pitch a tent, cook their own lunches on a gas stove, follow a trail of tracking signs through the woods, and sing around a camp fire in the evening.
We completed a clause of the Big Brownie Birthday Challenge too, by building a hotel for insects. We are grateful to Margaret and Linda from the Cheshire Wildlife Trust who came to help us. THANK YOU BOTH VERY MUCH. They brought lots of materials including some willow which inspired the Guides to create a 3D work of art. Can you spot the giant flower in the picture?
We challenge 1st Grange Rainbows to create some creatures who might live in this hotel!

May
In May we aimed to earn our Commonwealth Games Badges, called 'Ready Steady Glasgow' We began with a Scottish evening, making kilts and flags, walking blindfold through a thistle patch, learning the locations of places in Scotland, and singing Auld Lang Syne. Following this the Guides learned about the Commonwealth, and tried some crafts and experiments. The third part was taking part in an event from the Games. Blindfold running was chosen and we planned to do this in the park. Unfortunately, on the night we were treated to an impressive thunderstorn and torrential rain, so the guides ran up and down the hall whilst blindfolded. It was surprising how quickly they developed the confidence to really run. May finished with our trip to the Big Gig in the Echo Arena. we joined thousands of other Guides watching acts including Pixie Lott, Lawson and Tinie Tempah. |

July
July began with the County Outdoor Cooking Competition. The challenge was to produce a typical Second World War meal. Only one team from the unit was available to take part this year, but they did a great job producing Spam fritters with potatoes, cabbage and carrots, followed by cake fritters and fresh raspberries. They were awarded the trophy and also their Outdoor Cook badges.
At the end of July we went to camp for the weekend. The girls chose a 1960s theme. The patrols chose the names of 1960s groups, The leaders became the Thunderbirds. The weekend included blazing sunshine, torrential rain and a thunderstorm. At the end of the weekend girls were awarded Team Player and Camper badges.

September
We'd planned to spend an evening on the beach in semi darkness, but unfortunately it rained. Instead we fished for paper crabs with paper clips and magnets, and created art with sandpaper.

October
Continuing with the beach theme, we welcomed Karen from the RNLI to teach us about Beach safety. She was pleased that the girls already knew a lot about the local dangers such as weaver fish, and the route to Hilbre Island. She challenged the girls to make posters that could be used to warn visitors about the dangers.
with lots of practice of rescue techniques, and learning the first aid, the girls are earning their water safety badges.
November
The month began with a Community Action as a few of the girls volunteered to help with the refreshments at the Village Hall Auction.
Then we held a charity fair where all of the girls were able to choose their favourite charity and were allocated a table to raise money. With cakes and second hand books, refreshments, guessing the name of a puppy and the home of a bear, crafts, tombola, and even painting with one's feet, a lot of money was raised.
