Isn't the sunshine great? Hope you are all soaking it up after the long, wet winter. Some more names have come in to 1st Grange HQ here, So welcome to Pinky Penguin, Illy Penguin, Inca Puffin and Moonstone Unicorn. Which patrol do you think will have all their names in first? (I still haven't come up with a name for myself and am open to suggestions.)
The Guide motto is BE PREPARED, and, through Guiding we are all encouraged to try new challenges and learn new skills because we never know when we will be called upon to use them. I never thought thought that I would need to be prepared for spending the majority of my time at home due to a pandemic. I have realised that all the times we tried new foods and recipes will be useful now that its harder to buy our favourite foods. In addition those gardening skills will help because we can grow some cheery flowers in front gardens, and some veg in the back. Learning performing arts skills is coming in useful now too, because we can do lots of practice and entertain our families as a change form TV. Keeping yourself fit in body and mind means that you are prepared to deal with being isolated, and any DIY skills you have might be useful if something needs mending.
Which brings me to today's challenge: Light Bulbs.
YOU WILL NEED ADULT SUPERVISION.
WARNING Don't touch any light bulbs that are connected to a power supply. Unplug first.
ALSO they are made of glass, so handle VERY carefully.
Have you ever looked at all the types of bulbs? If your family has some spares in a cupboard get them out on a table. If not, ask an adult to take a few out of their places so that you can see them. What differences and similarities can you see?Make a list before you look here to see how observant you are.
Q. Why do you need to know this? A. So that you always replace a used bulb with the correct safe one.
Now you should learn how to change one safely. Ask your adult to help you learn and practise, and, when you are confident, compile a list of safety rules. You can use any media to make the list, written word, video etc.
An extra challenge: Where is the smallest light bulb in your house?
Badge Link - Skills For My Future Theme Award - 45 points
There is also a Be Prepared Interest Badge.
Planning ahead: If you are shopping, an orange or grapefruit and bird food will be handy next week. You will NEED string.
Reminders:
Most of these challenges can be done at any time.
Families are welcome to take part too.
Please send replies, photos, comments etc by email or WhatsApp through your parent/carers account.
To complete a Theme Award you need to achieve a Skillbuilder, an interest badge and 300 UMA points in that theme. If anyone wishes to know how many UMA points they already have in a theme, drop me a line. (some of you have over 200)
