Hello Guides
So far we have one name in, so hello to Spaghetti Puffin.
IMPORTANT: Few of the challenges will be time specific. You can do them today, next week, next month or never.
Today's challenge is linked to next Sunday. Your challenge is to try out different recipes for home made sweets. What you can make will depend upon what's in stock, but you did put cooking chocolate and icing sugar as priorities(!) on the shopping list didn't you? You will have to choose recipes to suit what you have in, until you next go/receive shopping.
The bad news is that I have failed to find any recipes for sweets you can make from loo roll.....
In the past we have used these ideas:
1. Melt chocolate, stir in some marshmallows, the mixture goes tacky and you can make it into balls- like truffles. Coat in vermicelli if you wish.
2. Use Royal icing sugar with water and some drops of peppermint essence to make peppermint creams. - in the past, we have tried to coat them in melted chocolate, but you need to have them really cold to start. (you can use different essences to make different flavours). If you only have ordinary icing sugar, you'll need to add egg white.
3. Melt plain chocolate and stir in a couple of drops of peppermint essence. As it starts cooling add a teaspoon of granulated sugar. if you get this right the sugar crystals don't dissolve. Put in moulds
4. Marzipan fruits - use marzipan and shape it like small fruits. You can paint with food colourings, and there are tricks like adding a small piece of angelica to make a strawberry top.
You can find lots of other ideas in books or on line. Fudge, Coconut ice, Toffee ....
Here's a start: BBC recipes.
if you have paper cases or even silicone moulds you are in luck. If not, you can line a tray with greaseproof paper or tinfoil, or use an ice cube tray, I have used the inner tray of a box of chocolates before now to make moulds.
NB: read the 'Stay Safe Guidance' on page 112, and follow it!
If you find a good recipe site, or have a favourite recipe, please put a link in the comments.
The great thing about this challenge is that, if they go wrong, you can eat all your mistakes.
But DO take some photos of whatever you make and send them in along with the recipe you used.

I've just seen the item on West Kirby Today about a Community action project. They would like everyone to paint a rainbow picture and put it in their front window. It will help to remind everyone that storms come to an end. If you don't fancy a Rainbow, then just draw some cheery pictures and put them on show. You'll be surprised how many smiles you can generate.
Did you know that Guiding has always run Guides (and Brownies and Rangers) for girls who are isolated and can't go to ordinary meetings? The Lone Guide system was set up in the early days. Sometimes girls went away to boarding schools, sometimes they were ill for a long time, lots of children with disabilities weren't even entitled to an education ( eg if you couldn't walk) so had no school friends.
My husband's Aunt Mary was a Lone Guider. Without computers, photocopiers or mobile phones she hand-wrote letters to them all in beautiful copperplate writing. She shared ideas for activities, congratulated them on achievements, and gave them a link to other girls in similar situations. She also liked to make detailed log books and scrap books. I believe some of these are in our County Archives. I have her Lones' Promise Badge somewhere, and will post a photo when I find it.
During WW2 Girlguiding actually started a school for children with disabilities called 'The Trefoil School'. Some of its pupils went on to become paralympians.
Have a good weekend and come back Monday for a new challenge. In the meantime, send in your nickname!
